Where Did Summer Go?!

Holy busy summer! Was it just me or did this summer completely fly by? I can’t believe it’s already nearing the end of September! Including our own wedding, from May to October, Jeff and I had 6 wedding invitations this year. Two weddings were in August just weeks before our own! I feel like I haven’t done anything expect plan for weddings, but thankfully I did drink some really yummy wines. Oh, and took a little trip out to Napa and Sonoma… But we’ll get to that later.

This summer was the summer of whites and rose’s for me! I’m not sure if it was the heat, or just my subconscious knowing I needed to drink more whites, but all I craved all summer was light and crisp whites and roses (and some Sangria). I’ve barely opened any reds since May! Here’s some favorites:

2012 Chateau d’Aqueria Tavel, Southern Rhone, France  ~$18

Nice and light. When cold is very bright and acidic without much fruit characteristic. But at room temperature it really softens and shows strawberry and mineral notes. )3/5 stars)

2011 Poets Leap Riesling, Columbia Valley, WA ~ $17

Beautiful Riesling. Medium bodied with rip epear and peach notes. Has a rich sweetness of fresh stone fruits. The finish is long with a crisp acidity and hint of minerals. (4/5)
2013 DMZ Cab Rose, Stellenbosch, South Africa ~$12

Fresh and fruity! Bright aromas of strawberry lead to soft notes of green grass, grapefruit and dried herbs. Beautiful cab rose! (4.5/5)

2012 Wente RivaRanch Chardonnay, Arroyo Seco, CA ~$16

Beautiful falvors and aromas of honeysuckle and peach. Soft with a hint of buttery brioche. (3.5/5)

2013 Louis Laurent Rose d’Anjou, Anjou, France ~$12

Bright aromas of red berries and citrus fruits lead toa ripe fruit palate. Notes of cherry are balanced by hints of apricot and grapefruit. Delicious, balanced and refreshing. My favorite Rose of the year! (4.5/5) 
Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Cuvee St. Anne, Champagne, France ~$88

I found a 375ml of this on the clearance table at work and scooped it up immediately! Aromas of honeysuckle, caramel and butterscotch. Bubbles are delicate and soft with developed notes of caramel, vanilla, honey, melon and marmalade. Hints of kiwi and lychee are balanced and dry. Unique Champagne! (3.5/5)
2012 Astrolabe Province Pinto Gris, Marlborough, NZ ~$47

Very delicate aromas of apple and pear with a hint of toffee and vanilla. The palate is soft and medium bodied with notes of baked apple, vanilla, honeysuckle and crisp citrus fruits. No detectable sweetness but a very balanced acidity. (4.5/5)

2013 Joseph Mellot Reuilly Les Milets, Loire, France ~$17

Excellent rose! Fresh and light with strawberry and peach flavors. Soft minerality and a balanced acidity. Perfect for the porch on a hot summer night! (4/5)
2013 Joseph Mellot Sincerite Pinot Noir Rose, Loire, France ~$14

Fresh and fruity. Strawberry and raspberry notes with a bright, balanced acidity. (4/5)

Meara’s Rosè Sangria Recipe

  • 2 Bottles Rosè
  • 2 cups Vodka
  • 1 cup diced watermelon
  • 1 bottle Honest Tea Mango Lemonade
  • 1 bottle Honest Tea Berry Hibiscus Lemonade (or other berry flavored)
  • 7 limes, sliced thin
  • 3 lemons, sliced thin
  • 1 ½ cup strawberries quartered
  • Fresh mint and basil

Mix everything in large pitcher and store in fridge over night. Serve with soda water or sparkling wine. Serves 10-12 depending on how you serve it. After all the Sangria’s been consumed, I like to take the leftover fruit and mix it with straight vodka and store it in the fridge for about a week. Then strain out the fruit and serve simply over ice with lemonade and fresh lime wedges!
