Spring… or Winter Whites

Brr! Although spring is technically right around the corner, it sure doesn’t feel like it. But I’m determined to celebrate spring – fresh flowers and white wine! Jeff bought me some beautiful tulips last week. I love having fresh flowers in the house, mainly because I’m a terrible gardener. (Although I have kept a few succulents barely alive throughout the winter.) Anyways, thinking about spring has me thinking about wine (what doesn’t have me thinking about wine…), but white wine specifically. In the summer I tend to drink Rosé, and in the fall and winter, I drink mainly reds. So when do whites come into play? Spring! But it’s still too cold out for light, crisp, refreshing whites, so how about some wines that still pair well with the bitter cold and mountains of snow?

How ‘bout some Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a versatile grape: it can be light, crisp and full of bright citrus fruits or it can be full-bodied and creamy with notes of butter, cream and toasted oak. Weather like this, where it’s 40 degrees and raining one day and sunny and 15 degrees the next, something somewhere in the middle is just what you’ll need.

Domaine Cheveau Pouilly Fuisse Trois Terroir ~$30 – This French Chard has juicy and fresh notes of pineapple and peach balanced by hints soft honey and toast nuts. The medium-bodied palate is smooth with a delicate nuttiness and a bright tropical fruit finish. Perfect for creamy pasta sauces, baked seafood and roast chicken.

Bread & Butter Chardonnay, Napa California ~$15- Aromas of bright tropical and citrus fruits are followed by hints of cream and vanilla. The palate offers full notes of papaya, banana and honey. The ‘buttered popcorn’ and vanilla flavors soften the bright acidity and create a long decadent finish. Serve with soft cheeses, shellfish and roast poultry dishes.

Or some Vouvray!

Vouvray is a white wine from the Loire Valley of France made with the Chenin Blanc grape. It is offered in a variety of styles from dry (sec) to sweet (moelleux) and sparkling (petillant). The most commonly found styles are sec and demi-sec.

2012 Champlou Vouvray (Chenin Blanc), Loire, France ~$20 – There are sweet floral aromas that lead to a medium body with sweet apple notes and a soft acidity. Vouvray is an excellent alternative to a chardonnay, without heavy oak but with a touch of sweetness. Serve lightly chilled with seafood, baked egg dishes and stir fry.

Guy Saget Vouvray Marie de Beauregard, Chenin Blanc, Loire, France ~$18 – There are bright aromas of fresh peach, honeysuckle and citrus fruits that lead to a medium-bodied palate with a delicate fruit flavors. This white offers a smooth balanced between a soft sweetness and crisp, bright acidity. Enjoy this chilled with fresh salads, spicy poultry or seafood dishes and fresh cherve.

2011 Trimbach Gewurztraminer, Alsace, France ~$20 – This spicy wine from Alsace has rich, luscious notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, and white pepper. The palate is elegant with notes of guava, melon and lychee with a soft minerality and bright acidity. I love this with some spicy Thai dishes, pork and fresh salads.

Boundary Breaks Late Harvest Riesling, Finger Lakes, New York ~$20 – This aromatic dessert riesling is made from grapes harvested late in the season when the berries have struggled and are dehydrated, resulting in an intense, concentrated wine. The palate offers sweet flavors of tropical fruits, honeysuckle, and white peach balanced by a fresh acidity. Serve this sweet white with blue cheese, lemon cakes and creamy desserts.
